Awards
To foster participation in our community and in the Civic Foundation, starting in 1969, the Civic and Foundation Awards were created to recognize those members of our community who have made significant personal contributions to Northbrook through service and/or individual achievement. In 1984 the Special Service Award and in 1992 the Outstanding Volunteer Award were started by the Awards Committee of the Civic Foundation.
Prior to 1992, the Civic Foundation only awarded the Civic Award and the Foundation Award. The Award Committee felt that there should be some way to recognize volunteer activity that occurred outside the Civic Foundation. This activity would be with one of the many non-profit organizations in the Village of Northbrook. The committee would send letters to all these organizations and ask for a nomination of a candidate that made their organization something special. This person would be someone who over a number of years really made a difference. We were looking for a member that demonstrated leadership and through their efforts help make their organization something special.
The only difference between the Outstanding Volunteer Award and the Civic Award would be that with the Civic Award, the candidate would have demonstrated a number of activity areas that benefited the community. Both awards in reality are on the same level but with this criteria, we could recognize those candidates who dedicated their efforts primarily in one area.
The acceptance of the Outstanding Volunteer Award by the community of Northbrook has been overwhelming. Each year we seem to find more worthy candidates that can now be properly recognized.
